1. Policy Statement

Our Summer Camp is committed to ensuring a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where all children are protected from harm, abuse, and neglect. The welfare of the child is paramount.

2. Legal Framework

This policy is based on:

- Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1995

- Co-operating to Safeguard Children and Young People in Northern Ireland (2017)

- Minimum Standards for Childminding and Daycare for Children under Age 12 (DHSSPSNI)

- The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)

3. Aims

- To protect all children attending our camp from abuse and harm.

- To respond appropriately to any concerns.

- To maintain a safe and child-centred environment.

- To work in partnership with children, parents, and agencies.

The DSO is responsible for:

- Managing safeguarding concerns or allegations

- Liaising with parents/carers and statutory agencies

- Ensuring staff and volunteers follow safeguarding procedures

5. Code of Conduct for Staff and Volunteers

- Always act in the best interests of children.

- Never use physical punishment or shout inappropriately.

- Avoid being alone with a child unless necessary.

- Report concerns immediately to the DSO.

- Maintain professional boundaries at all times.

6. Safe Recruitment

We will ensure:

- All staff and volunteers are vetted via AccessNI Enhanced Checks.

- References are obtained and checked.

- Interviews assess safeguarding awareness.

7. Training

All staff and volunteers will:

- Complete safeguarding training appropriate to their role.

- Receive a copy of this safeguarding policy.

- Be required to refresh training every 2 years.

8. Recognising Abuse

All staff are trained to recognise signs of:

- Physical abuse

- Emotional abuse

- Sexual abuse

- Neglect

9. Responding to Concerns

If a child discloses or if abuse is suspected:

- Listen carefully and reassure the child.

- Do not promise confidentiality—explain you must share with the DSO.

- Report the concern to the DSO immediately.

- Record the incident factually and confidentially.

10. Record Keeping

Records of all concerns, disclosures, and referrals will be:

- Factual and dated

- Kept securely and confidentially

- Shared only with appropriate agencies

11. Partnership with Parents

We will:

- Share this policy with parents on registration.

- Encourage open communication about any concerns.

- Inform parents of any incidents involving their child (unless doing so risks harm).

12. Whistleblowing

Staff are encouraged to raise concerns about:

- The behaviour of colleagues

- Poor practice

- Policy breaches

Concerns can be reported confidentially to the DSO or relevant Trust contact.
